Biological Dentistry, Answered Honestly.
The real questions we hear from patients about holistic and biological dentistry, answered calmly, without hype, and without pressure.
Biological Dentistry, Explained
If you’re new to biological dentistry, you probably have questions. Here are the ones we hear most, answered the way we’d explain them in the chair.
What is biological (holistic) dentistry?
Biological dentistry, also called holistic dentistry, is conventional, licensed dentistry practiced with an awareness that the mouth is connected to the rest of the body. It emphasizes biocompatible, metal-free materials, conservative treatment that preserves natural tooth structure, and looking for the root cause of a problem rather than only treating the symptom.
How is a biological dentist different from a regular dentist?
A biological dentist is a fully licensed dentist with the same core clinical training. The difference is philosophy and materials: a focus on metal-free, biocompatible restorations, techniques like safe amalgam removal and ozone therapy, 3D imaging to make conservative decisions, and considering how oral health interacts with your overall wellness. It’s conventional dentistry with a whole-body lens, not an alternative to it.
Is biological dentistry legitimate and backed by science?
The foundations of biological dentistry, biocompatible materials, minimally invasive techniques, and the mouth-body connection, are increasingly supported by mainstream research, including growing evidence on the oral microbiome. As in all of medicine, some areas are well established and others are still emerging. We aim to be honest about that distinction and to ground recommendations in current evidence rather than fear.
Why do you remove mercury (amalgam) fillings a special way?
Silver amalgam fillings are roughly half mercury by weight, and drilling one out can release mercury vapor. That’s why we follow the SMART protocol (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) from the IAOMT, extra suction, isolation, filtered air, and protective measures designed to minimize exposure for you, the team, and the environment during removal.
Do I have to replace all my fillings?
Not necessarily. Whether and when to replace an existing filling is an individual clinical decision based on the condition of the tooth and your goals, not a blanket rule. Some people choose to replace old amalgams over time; others don’t. We’ll give you an honest assessment and let you decide. There’s no pressure.
What is ozone therapy in dentistry?
Ozone is a form of oxygen used in dentistry as a gas, ozonated water, or ozonated oil to help reduce bacteria and support a clean environment for healing. It’s a gentle, antibiotic-free adjunct we may use during cleanings, under fillings, or after procedures. It complements standard care rather than replacing it.
Are ceramic implants better than titanium?
Ceramic (zirconia) implants are metal-free and a good option for patients who prefer to avoid metal or have sensitivities. Both zirconia and titanium can be excellent, well-researched choices; the right one depends on your anatomy, the site, and your preferences. We plan every implant with 3D imaging and will walk you through the trade-offs.
What is a cavitation, and is it real?
A cavitation refers to an area of poorly healed bone that can occasionally develop where a tooth was extracted. It’s a debated topic in dentistry, so we approach it carefully and diagnostically, using 3D CBCT imaging to actually look at the bone rather than assuming, and only recommend treatment when the evidence warrants it.
Do you offer fluoride-free care?
Yes. We’re happy to work with your preferences around fluoride and offer alternatives such as nano-hydroxyapatite for remineralization. Fluoride is a nuanced topic; our role is to give you balanced information and respect your choices for you and your family.
What should I expect as a new patient?
Your first visit is unhurried. We take time to understand your history and goals, complete a thorough exam with modern imaging, and talk through options in plain language, no rushing, no pressure. You’ll leave understanding what’s going on and what your choices are. You can request a visit online or call (310) 275-1399.
