Your Dentist May Be the First to Notice How You Breathe.

Worn teeth, a scalloped tongue, morning headaches, sleep that never quite restores you. The mouth often shows the earliest signs of a struggling airway, and a dental exam is one of the few places anyone looks closely.

Where It Shows Up First

The Mouth Keeps a Record of How You Breathe

Breathing is supposed to be effortless, especially while you sleep. When it isn’t, the body leaves evidence, and a surprising amount of it appears in the mouth: flattened, worn teeth from grinding, a scalloped edge along the tongue, a high narrow palate, wear at the gum line.

None of those findings diagnose anything on their own. What they do is raise a question most dental visits never ask: how are you actually breathing at night?

When the pattern suggests a possible airway issue, we help you get properly evaluated, which, for a diagnosis of sleep apnea, means a sleep study directed by a physician. Dentists don’t make that diagnosis. We’re often just the first to spot the signs.

Oral Appliance Therapy

A Trained Vivos Provider

For appropriate candidates, often people who snore, who have been diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or who simply can’t tolerate CPAP, a custom oral appliance can help support an open airway through the night.

Dr. Mersedeh is a trained Vivos provider. These appliances are worn during sleep, hold the airway in a more favorable position, and in some protocols are used to support the development of the oral and nasal space over time. They’re removable, they travel easily, and there’s no machine to plug in.

This is care delivered alongside your physician, not instead of them. An appliance is a tool within a medical picture, and it works best when everyone treating you is looking at the same information.

Why It Matters

Sleep Is Not a Separate System

Airway health reaches into nearly everything, energy, focus, mood, recovery, how well the body repairs itself over decades. Which is exactly why it doesn’t belong in a silo labeled “sleep.”

For some patients, airway support is combined with myofunctional therapy, alignment, or other biological approaches, sequenced thoughtfully and only where they fit. For others, the most useful thing we do is notice the pattern and point them toward the right physician.

The goal was never a device. It’s helping your body do something it was built to do.

Airway rarely stands alone. It often connects to myofunctional therapy, alignment, and the whole-body view behind biological dentistry.

If sleep hasn’t felt restful in a long time, your airway is worth a closer look.
