Before I Am a Dentist, I Am a Healer.
I’m Dr. Mersedeh Rajinia, founder of Sunset Biological Dentistry. My path into this work began long before dental school, and it has always been guided by one question: how do we care for the whole person, not just the tooth in the chair?
A Journey That Started Long Before Dental School
I grew up in Iran and moved to the United States on my own after high school, in pursuit of greater opportunity and education. I attended the University of Southern California, where I graduated with Dean’s List honors.
During my undergraduate studies, I conducted and published research investigating the toxicity of antimicrobial medications used to treat oral infections in immunocompromised patients, including those living with HIV. Our work focused on finding therapies that could eliminate harmful microbes while minimizing toxicity to human cells.
This idea of therapeutic dosage fascinated me, and it became one of the earliest influences on how I think about care. It taught me something I have never let go of: substances meant to heal can also cause harm when their effects on the body are overlooked. That lesson still shapes how I evaluate every material and treatment today.
Trained in Precision, Drawn to Preservation
During dental school, I completed six hospital-based externships focused on oral cancer, reconstructive, and microvascular surgery. Many of these procedures were performed under a microscope, and they gave me a deep appreciation for meticulous craftsmanship, attention to detail, and preserving healthy tissue whenever possible.
My passion for excellence later led me to advanced training at the Aesthetic Advantage program with Dr. Larry Rosenthal, one of the pioneers of cosmetic dentistry. I expanded my surgical training further through implant and periodontal mini-residencies in Brazil and Mexico, studying advanced techniques in implant placement, soft tissue management, and oral rehabilitation.
I am always learning. The more I see, the more convinced I am that the smallest details, the ones easy to rush past, are often what protect a tooth for a lifetime.
The Mouth Is Not Separate From the Body
After dental school, I expanded my education beyond traditional dentistry by completing the Integrative Nutrition Health Coach Program through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. It reinforced a belief I had been carrying for years: the mouth cannot be separated from the rest of the body.
Nutrition, inflammation, gut health, mental well-being, and oral health are all deeply interconnected. What nourishes one person may not work for another. True care requires understanding each patient as a unique individual, personalized, not population-level.
That is why a visit with me often includes questions other dental offices skip. The answers tend to reveal more than the X-rays do.

Patients, Not Insurance Claims or Treatment Plans
Like many dentists after graduation, I worked in a variety of private and corporate practices. Those experiences were valuable, but I often found myself practicing inside systems shaped by insurance limitations and production goals. I realized I could not fully care for patients in a way that aligned with my values and purpose.
That belief led me to purchase my own practice and build an environment where patients are treated as whole human beings. My philosophy centers on biological and biomimetic dentistry, preserving natural tooth structure, supporting the body’s own ability to heal, and addressing the root cause of disease rather than simply managing symptoms.
I am committed to conservative dentistry, because once healthy tooth structure is removed, it can never truly be replaced. And I am equally passionate about identifying and reducing chronic inflammation, one of the most overlooked contributors to poor health. My mission is to help patients understand the connection between oral health and whole-body wellness, so they can achieve not only healthier smiles, but healthier lives.
Become a patient
Nothing is more fulfilling to me than helping someone feel better, function better, and live healthier.
